Use Countorra in Claude, ChatGPT and more
Connect an AI app such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor to Countorra, so it can answer questions from your own records.
AI apps that support remote MCP servers, such as Claude, ChatGPT and Cursor, can read your Countorra records and answer questions about your spending, budgets or net worth. Connecting AI apps needs a paid Countorra plan.
Start in Settings → Connected AI apps. Under Connect your AI app, pick your app and follow its steps: most need one click or one command. The Server address, https://countorra.com/api/mcp, is there with Copy for any other app. The app then opens a Countorra page where you sign in, if you aren't already, and choose what it may do. You never type your Countorra password into the AI app.
Reading is always part of a connection. The app can see your accounts (name, bank and last 4 digits), balances, transactions, budgets, cash flow, recurring payments, investments, loans and net worth, and on Countorra Tax the tax Countorra calculates for the year. Allow changes is a separate box that is never ticked for you. With it, the app can categorize transactions, add notes, create rules and set a month's budget, up to 20 at a time. Without it, the app isn't even shown those tools. Every change is listed in Countorra.
With changes allowed, Ask before each change is on. When an app wants to change something, it gives you a link: you see the exact change in Countorra, press Approve or Decline, and nothing happens until you do. You can turn this off for one app in Settings → Connected AI apps, and then categories and budgets change right away. Notes and rules always ask first, because a note is text other AI reads later and a rule decides how later transactions are filed. A note or rule from an AI app is marked as written by an AI app, and Ask Countorra treats it as data, never as an instruction.
You can choose Only these accounts instead of All accounts. Budgets, forecasts, subscriptions and tax aren't shared then, because they're worked out from all your accounts.
One connection is one person in one workspace. If you have more than one workspace, you pick one when you connect. On a Family plan, a member's app sees only what that member already sees in Countorra. If your role can view but not change records, the app can only read.
An AI app can never move money, pay or cancel anything, delete anything, or change your settings or security. It never gets your Social Security number, full account numbers, tax documents or bank login. Countorra calculates your tax; it never files a return or pays anything. Tax figures an app receives are labelled calculated by Countorra, and come with the accounts, paychecks and deposits they were worked out from and the rule behind each one.
Settings → Connected AI apps lists each app, what it may do and when it was last used, and anything waiting for your approval. Changes by AI apps lists every change with what it was before: Undo puts it back, unless it was changed again since. Activity lists every request an app made, what it asked for and never what it was shown, and keeps it for 90 days. Revoke disconnects an app in one click and stops it at once. On iPhone, the same is under More → Connected AI Apps.
Good to know
- Claude (web, desktop and phone): choose Claude and press Add to Claude. Claude opens with Countorra filled in: choose Add, then Connect, and sign in on Countorra's page. To add it by hand, go to Customize → Connectors in Claude, choose Add custom connector (under + Add), name it Countorra and paste the address. On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner adds it under Organization settings → Connectors and each member chooses Connect. Turn it on in a chat from the + button → Connectors. Claude's free tier allows one custom connector.
- Claude Code: run claude mcp add --transport http countorra https://countorra.com/api/mcp (add --scope user to use it in every project). In Claude Code, type /mcp, choose countorra and sign in in your browser.
- ChatGPT (on the web): open Plugins at chatgpt.com/plugins, choose +, then Add custom MCP server. Name it Countorra, paste the address under Connection, choose OAuth, accept the warning and choose Create as a plugin. Install it, start a new chat, type @ and pick Countorra. ChatGPT asks you to approve each change before it's made. Whether your ChatGPT plan and workspace allow custom MCP servers is set by OpenAI and your workspace admin.
- Cursor: choose Cursor and press Add to Cursor, and Cursor asks to install Countorra. To add it by hand, put it in ~/.cursor/mcp.json, or in .cursor/mcp.json for one project: { "mcpServers": { "countorra": { "url": "https://countorra.com/api/mcp" } } }. Cursor signs in with OAuth through Countorra's page. Turn it on or off under Customize in Cursor's sidebar.
- VS Code: choose VS Code and press Install in VS Code, then Install. To add it by hand, run code --add-mcp '{"name":"Countorra","type":"http","url":"https://countorra.com/api/mcp"}'.
- From your own code: your Countorra API key also works on https://countorra.com/api/mcp, read only. Pass it as the MCP server's authorization in the OpenAI Responses API (authorization) or the Anthropic Messages API's MCP connector (authorization_token). A key sees only what its scopes allow, can't make changes, and counts toward your daily API reads.
- Daily limits: Countorra Management allows 1,000 reads and 100 changes a day. Countorra Tax, Countorra Management Family and Countorra Tax Family allow 5,000 reads and 1,000 changes a day. Every plan allows up to 60 requests a minute.
- Days start at 00:00 UTC. Changing 20 transactions counts as 20 changes. Every app you connect to the same workspace shares your limits; Settings → Connected AI apps shows what you've used today.
- An app that hasn't been used for 30 days asks you to sign in again.
