Using Countorra

Budgets and goals

Plan a month per category, and save toward something or pay a debt down.

See what's left for the month, and which category is running ahead while there's still time.

Budget sets a plan per spending category for each month. A new plan carries into every month after. Changing a plan that already exists changes that month only — past months included, so you can true one up — and the line then offers Use for the following months too. Each line shows planned, spent, the share used against how much of the month has gone, where it's heading if the rest of the month goes as usual, and how it compares with last month and with your 3-month average (for the month in progress, by the same day). Categories at risk are named at the top. Countorra tells you when a category reaches 80% and when it goes over.

Switch months with the arrows (on the iPhone, swipe or tap the arrows); the months either side are read ahead, so a switch is instant. Click a category to see its transactions for that month. Each line's gear opens its panel: Roll over or Reset each month, the balance carried in (unspent money adds to next month, overspending takes from it) with Reset to 0, Add money (a bonus or a gift — it turns roll over on so it carries forward), Move money to or from another category in one step, a 12-month chart, and this month's changes, each with Undo. These change your budget only: Countorra never moves real money.

Save for a bill turns a category into a sinking fund for a yearly or one-off bill — car insurance, holidays, gifts: give it a target and a due month and it shows what you've saved, the date, and what each month needs. It always rolls over, and a yearly one starts its next year on its own after the bill.

Left over is income minus bills (your Fixed categories), spending and savings (what you put into sinking funds or moved to a goal). At the end of a month you can Move $X to savings — to a goal or a sinking fund; it records where the money is meant to go, and moves nothing. For the month in progress, Projection shows your cash balance at the month's end and 3, 6 or 12 months out, from your balance, recurring income and bills, and your usual spending, with a what-if ("I cut dining by $200 a month"). It is a projection, not a promise.

Goals tracks saving up or paying a debt down. Progress counts the accounts you link plus anything you add by hand, and each goal shows what's left, what a month needs to keep the date, your pace so far, whether you're ahead of or behind a straight line to the date, and when your pace gets you there. Projections use your numbers and your pace so far; they aren't financial advice.
